Congresswoman April McClain Delaney Releases Statement on Trump Administration’s Actions Related to Our Federal Workforce

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney released the following statement on the Trump Administration’s attacks on our federal workforce. Earlier today, she joined a press conference outside of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) with several members of Congress to stand up for our federal civil servants. This comes on the heels of the Trump administration's OMB directive to illegally freeze Congressionally approved federal funding and its letter to more than two million federal employees offering a buy-out from service.

“I am deeply troubled by the Administration’s and Elon Musk’s actions to access the U.S. Treasury Department’s federal payment system, including U.S. taxpayers’ confidential financial information, to slash critical federal programs and summarily threaten termination of thousands of federal workers. Americans’ personal financial data should never be accessed by individuals who are not vetted government officials or who might have conflicts of interest. I am even further alarmed by the Trump administration's flagrant efforts over the weekend to seek political retribution against federal agents for past investigations by the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies.

These attacks against our federal institutions strike at the bedrock of American values and represent an unprecedented power grab that has the potential to undermine our democracy’s checks and balances and devalue the incredible talent of our dedicated, non-partisan civil servants. Many of these actions have not been authorized and rightfully belong under the purview of Congress. While I have long believed in seeking 'common ground' when governing,  I must now stand my ground given the democratic core principles involved.

As the Congressional Representative of over 35,000 government workers, and countless more workers tied to these agencies, I am fighting to ensure that our federal workers and their employment rights are respected, that their years of deep experience and public service are not devalued and that all agency and employment actions being undertaken are lawful. From NIST to Fort Detrick to our National Fire Academy, federal workers in Maryland’s 6th District are depending on Congress to stand up for them. I call on our Speaker Johnson, Majority Leader Thune and those operating at executive levels within our agencies to push back against these over-reaching actions.”
