Congresswoman April McClain Delaney Releases Statement on Trump Administration’s Sweeping Federal Funding Freeze

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney released the following statement on the Trump administration’s Office of Management and Budget’s rescinding of its directive to temporarily freeze all federal grants, loans and other aid:

“The last two days have resulted in chaos, confusion and fear for millions of Marylanders and their families. These actions hit home, and they cut deep. The actions were unprecedented, unlawful and over-broad in scope and reach, and they were done without thoughtful consideration of the impact on everyday communities and individual families. Yesterday I released a statement about how our Congressional office is open and ready to help, and that we will be tracking this unpredictable landscape best we can to give guidance to constituents of the 6th District. We are committed to being a stable and calm voice for the district and pushing back against overreach.

It must be remembered that these actions, often driven by goals articulated in the Project 25 project, must be reviewed constitutionally and more than 20 attorney generals and many public interest entities have sued to counter their enforcement. But make no mistake, these actions have real-life impacts on individuals within the district and state. Specifically, there are over 75 Boys & Girls Clubs in Maryland–all dependent on federal funding to serve tens of thousands of children. Yesterday, my team spoke with a local Boys & Girls Club director who was far more concerned about how these children were going to eat or where they would sleep without federal food and rental assistance than the Club’s ability to operate.

I met with police departments yesterday and confirmed that some of their public safety grants were at risk or frozen. And heartbreakingly, I heard about a girl fighting cancer, who was told she would not be able to participate in an NIH trial for cancer treatment until federal funding was unfrozen. This is the reality we are collectively living in in the wake of these disruptive and nonsensical executive actions.

In the last day, I’ve joined numerous calls and meetings with my Congressional colleagues to demand guidance and amplify the overwhelming distress and concern of our citizens. I am glad the Administration listened and rescinded this order.

While these programs and services may still be in jeopardy, according to the White House Press Secretary, I strongly urge the Trump Administration to work with Congress to govern responsibly and understand the separation of powers in government. I wholeheartedly support greater effectiveness and efficiency of our government but do not support indiscriminate mandates that greatly harm communities and sow fear in our communities.”
