Congresswoman April McClain Delaney Releases Statement on H.R. 28

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney (MD-06) released a statement on her vote on H.R. 28:

“As the mother of four daughters who have been student-athletes, I am a huge supporter of furthering athletic opportunities for girls and ensuring their safety while playing. While I understand parents’ concerns about boys playing in girls sports, H.R. 28 does not come close to addressing these issues.

Quite the opposite, this bill could adversely impact girls’ athletics across our country and the way sports are played, and most certainly jeopardize critical federal funding dollars needed by our schools.

This legislation raises overriding concerns about how all girls across the country will have their privacy invaded through potentially invasive checks or sex inquiries, serves as a top down, federal mandate that steps in front of local sport leagues, athletic associations and school boards (who should be making these decisions) and jeopardizes critical funding dollars our schools desperately need and depend upon.

I voted ‘no’ on this poorly constructed and stigmatizing legislation. Moving forward, I hope to work with my Republican colleagues on how to create good paying jobs, tackle affordability and improve US competitiveness and innovation.”
