Congresswoman April McClain Delaney Releases Statement on House Republicans’ Cuts to NIH, Veterans Healthcare and Community Project Funding
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney (MD-06), released the following statement after voting ‘no’ on the House Republicans’ Continuing Resolution (CR):
“The House Republicans' CR cuts funding for critical federal programs relied upon by hardworking American families and further fails to address issues of affordability, inflation and safety in our communities. When I ran for Congress, I committed to delivering common-sense, common-ground solutions for Maryland’s 6th District and across the country–and I still am.
I, along with many Democratic colleagues, remain eager to engage with our Republican colleagues on how best to tackle our national deficit and invest in new strategies to strengthen our GDP, fight inflation, and create good-paying jobs. Yet thus far, I am deeply concerned by the Administration and House Majority’s pursuit of extremely damaging tariff wars, renouncing of NATO allies and cutting of U.S. support to Ukraine, nonsensical workforce reductions and program freezes at critical research, first responder and national security agencies (including NIH, NCI, NIST, Ft. Detrick and the National Fire Academy). Further, the Majority’s budget passed days ago includes devastating cuts to programs most Americans depend on to get by, including Medicaid/CHIP and SNAP benefits–which more than one in three children in my district depend upon for food.
The CR before us today jeopardizes critical programs that impact the health and well-being of our nation’s families and undermines our economic resilience and national security, in part by cutting hundreds of millions of dollars from our National Institutes of Health (NIH), takes $23 billion from veterans suffering from exposure to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxins during their service to our nation, and robs communities of vital Community Project Funding to improve public safety, infrastructure, etc.
We should all work to make our government run more effectively, but never at the cost of our communities' health and safety. We can and must do better to build a stronger, safer future for our country.”
In the House Republicans’ Continuing Resolution as written, all Community Project Funding was cut for Fiscal Year 2025, including the following projects for Maryland’s 6th District as requested by former Rep. David Trone. Sadly, these projects include:
Garrett County
1. Grantsville Sidewalk and Crosswalk Safety Project - $850,000
Allegany County
1. Potomac Fire Company No. 2 Engine Replacement - $680,000
2. Frostburg State University Planetarium - $1.2 million
