Congresswoman April McClain Delaney Releases Statement on House Republicans’ Cuts to SNAP, Medicaid Amid Increasing Living Costs for Families

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney (MD-06), released the following statement after voting ‘no’ on the House Republicans’ budget reconciliation package:

"Solving our nation's financial challenges requires a bipartisan approach that thoughtfully reduces spending, raises needed revenue, and supports those who need it most. Unfortunately, the current budget proposal falls short, prioritizing tax cuts for the wealthiest while putting vulnerable families at risk.

These proposed cuts in this bill will have a direct and devastating impact on families in Maryland’s 6th District by mandating cuts which could reach up to an $880 billion reduction to Medicaid and a $230 billion cut to SNAP. In our district, one in seven people depend on Medicaid/CHIP for affordable healthcare, including one in three children, while one in ten households rely on SNAP to put food on the table.

I have heard from so many families across the political spectrum who are justifiably concerned about this package. While I had hoped to work with my colleagues on lowering inflation and strengthening our economy, I will not vote for measures which will make life harder for the families, farmers, and the businesses of my district.

I will again reiterate my deep belief that Congress must be serious about addressing our nation’s disastrous fiscal trajectory. America should be using our budget levers to make smart investments in our future, protecting those most vulnerable through a strong safety net and ensuring our US competitiveness through research and innovation. We should be closing tax loopholes and ensuring that the most fortunate pay their fair share of tax. The notion that we can either just cut, or just tax,  our way to long term financial health is preposterous.

This budget reconciliation package is a partisan bill designed to cut taxes for the wealthiest while putting our most vulnerable at risk. At its core, it is bad policy and does not reflect our values.”
