Congresswoman April McClain Delaney Releases Statement Against the SAVE Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney (D-MD) released the following statement against the SAVE Act:
“I voted against the SAVE Act because it strikes at the heart of our democratic values. While the bill claims to protect against voter fraud, its requirements—like forcing voters to present a passport or birth certificate instead of a driver’s license—are deeply flawed and could disenfranchise millions of Americans.
This legislation could create serious barriers for the 146 million Americans who don’t own a passport and the more than 69 million women, myself included, whose legal names today do not match their birth certificates—including more than 1.2 million women in Maryland alone. Even further, this legislation could force rural voters in my district, who already struggle with access to polling places, to travel long distances to update their information. This is not only inconvenient–it’s unjust.
Voter fraud is exceedingly rare in our country, with studies showing it occurs at a rate of less than 0.0003%. The SAVE Act is a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist, but more alarmingly, it risks silencing voices that deserve to be heard. In a free and fair democracy, we should aim to make voting more accessible, not less, which is why I voted against this extraordinarily ill-conceived effort.”
