Congresswoman April McClain Delaney Releases Condemns Cuts to SNAP, Medicaid in House Majority’s Budget Reconciliation Package

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney (MD-06), released the following statement condemning the Majority’s budget reconciliation bill, which passed in the U.S. House earlier this morning:

“My heart is heavy given this package will result in a tsunami of funding cuts that will hurt those most vulnerable in our country --especially children-- and particularly hit our rural communities. Ironically, this bill does not even address our country’s dismal fiscal trajectory and instead adds a staggering $3.8 trillion to our nation's deficit. These are utterly misguided priorities-- taking from our neediest Americans to hand out tax breaks to our wealthiest, cutting crucial safety net and hunger programs, and driving our country deeper into debt. It did not have to be this way, and our country deserves so much better.

I am particularly concerned about the largest proposed cuts to SNAP and Medicaid in our nation’s history, the gutting of investments in crucial research and education programs, and additional threats to Medicare and Social Security benefits. In Maryland’s 6th Congressional District, 1 in 9 families rely on SNAP just to put food on the table. 1 in 7 people depend on Medicaid for their health care—including 1 in 3 children. More than 95,000 children across our district, from Montgomery County to Garrett County, receive free and reduced-price lunches at school—kids who may now go hungry under the legislation’s new, restrictive eligibility rules.

The cuts in this bill betray the values of fairness, compassion and fiscal responsibility. We should be working to lift up America’s working class, not turn our backs on them.”
