Congresswoman April McClain Delaney Condemns Potential Cuts to Medicaid in House Republicans’ Reconciliation Package
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney (MD-06) released the following statement on House Republicans’ proposed reconciliation package instructing the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over Medicaid, to find $880 billion in savings over the next 10 years. To accomplish this radical mandate, heavy cuts to Medicaid coverage or federal cost share with states are expected.
“As the largest health insurer in the United States, Medicaid is at the center of our nation's healthcare safety net, providing essential healthcare for low-income Americans. It improves healthcare outcomes, supports community healthcare providers and, at its core, demonstrates our belief in human dignity.
The House Republicans’ reconciliation proposal, as written, sadly prioritizes tax cuts for the most wealthy at the expense of Medicaid, a program designed for only one purpose: to provide basic healthcare for children, families and seniors struggling to get by.
For me, this is neither a partisan issue nor an issue about government efficiency, which I am all for improving. The House Republicans’ proposed Medicaid cuts are an attack on the moral obligation we have to support the basic, and often lifesaving, healthcare needs of families and their children.
Moreover, one in seven Marylanders in my district rely on Medicaid or CHIP to access affordable care–including nearly one in three children. These callous cuts to Medicaid could prove dangerous for our nation’s 80 million recipients and, further, economically disastrous to poorer states heavily reliant on the majority federal cost share.
I will work with my Republican colleagues on strengthening our economy and making our communities safer, but I won't work with anyone to cut our healthcare safety net for the least fortunate among us.”
Friday, Congresswoman McClain Delaney visited Family Healthcare of Hagerstown, which heavily relies on HHS funding, to discuss contingency plans with its team if the Administration’s funding cuts move forward. Family Healthcare is designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center and serves a critical role in the community as Washington County is currently designated as a Health Professional Shortage Area, which means that there are 3,500 or more patients per provider. According to the Center, 62% of its patients are Medicaid recipients who may be impacted by the deep funding cuts expected to affect the federal program.
